As I have traveled my own health journey, I have tried to simplify my life in many areas. One way I have done this is to reduce the number of household cleaners I use. There are so many products available. Unfortunately, most of them contain toxic chemicals that can quite detrimental to our health.

United States manufactures are allowed to use many potentially toxic chemicals in cleaning products. Some of these are known carcinogens and others can be harmful to infants and children. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) provides a Guide to Healthy Cleaning on their website. You can check out how good or bad your household cleaning products are for your health and the health of your family. To “clean up” my cleaning supplies, I have been using baking soda for many cleaning projects. Baking soda scored an A+ on EWG’s guide. Today, I will share a few ways that baking soda can be used on various cleaning projects around the house.

The bathroom is great place to try out baking soda. Here are three ways you can use it for cleaning your bathroom.

Glass Shower Door

Supplies:

  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  1. Mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with vinegar to obtain a paste
  2. Apply the paste over the stained area and let sit for 10 minutes
  3. Use a non-scratch sponge to gently rub the glass surface, rinse with lukewarm water
Grout

Supplies:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Grout brush or small brush
  • Water
  1. Spray grout with vinegar and let stand for 5 minutes
  2. Make a baking soda and water paste in a small dish
  3. Dip your grout brush into the baking soda paste and scrub the grout lines
  4. Spray again with vinegar, rinse with warm water
Toilet
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  1. Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda into the toile
  2. Pour 1 cup of household vinegar into the bowl
  3. Put the lid down and let the ingredients work for 30 minutes
  4. After 30 minutes, scrub the bowl with a toilet brush
  5. Flush the toilet when the bowl is clean

The kitchen is another area that baking soda can be great. Here are a couple of recipes.

Kitchen Cleaner and Deodorizer
  • Baking Soda, 4 tablespoons
  • Warm water, 1 quart

Combine and mix well, you can pour into a spray bottle for easy use

Stained Cutting Board

Make a baking soda and water paste. Apply to the stained cutting board, wait as long as overnight. If the stain isn’t gone, add a few drops of vinegar to help pull out the stain. Rinse and dry.

Laundry

To brighten your whites and colors, add 1 cup of baking soda to your load. This can help balance pH levels.

De-Clog a Drain

Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain followed by ½ cup vinegar. Cover with a wet cloth to contain the reaction. Wait 5 minutes, then flush with hot water

Keeping your cleaning supplies “clean” for your health and the environment is a great investment. Baking soda is great for your budget too as it is relatively inexpensive. I encourage you to check out EWG’s guide to see how your current household cleaning products stand. You might be really surprised as to how toxic many of them are. What cleaning projects have you used baking soda? What grade did your cleaning products receive?

Be blessed and be a blessing,
