The day we are born we begin to age! Recently I have entered my 6th decade and with this I have been doing a lot of contemplating. Questions I have asked myself include: How did this happen? Where did those years go? What will the next ten years look like? Why do they call these years the golden years? What do I want to change in my life today? Yes, these are the many questions that have gone through my mind.

What Can Be Done?

So, what does it mean to age gracefully? I think this will be something different for everyone. For me, I want to take care of myself, so I remain healthy and strong. One of the ways I support my local community is to teach classes to those 55 and older. I share with these participants that the best gift you can give your family, friends and the world is a healthy you. This is so true no matter your age, but it seems to be more important as we age. One thing we should gain as we age is wisdom, and it is important that we be able to share that wisdom with others.

Here are seven tips to age gracefully that you can begin today.
  1. Live for Today – Appreciate each and every day. This can be a challenge because not every day will be a “good” day. We don’t know what each day will bring but often we can find something good about it.
  2. Lower Your Stress – This can be a tough one for many. Stress affects your body in so many ways which include premature aging, higher risk of heart disease, digestive health, and sleep are just a few areas.
  3. Stay Physically Active – A sedentary life is linked to an increased risk of chronic disease. Keep moving; you may have to modify your activity level as you age but still keep going as best you can. Motion is life. Exercise also lowers stress, improves sleep, skin and bone health.
  4. Eat Well – Food is fuel for your body. By choosing whole, real food you are giving your body the tools to stay strong and healthy.
  5. Sleep – This can be a challenge as we age. It is important for both your physical and mental health. Getting enough sleep has shown to reduce stress, lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, lower the risk of obesity, reduce inflammation to just name a few.
  6. Keep Learning – Stay curious; you are never too old to learn something new. This not only challenges you mentally, it can help maintain your sense of purpose in the world. We all have a purpose, no matter our age.
  7. Stay Connected – Your sense of feeling connected can boost your mental health which in turn can reduce stress, improve our physical health, provide a sense of belonging, and may actually increase your longevity.
What Will Be Your Next Step?

These tips are straight forward and most of us “know” we could be doing them, but this is just a reminder of how very important they are no matter your age. Each year we can choose to build our health or not, it is up to each one of us. If you were wondering where the term “golden years” came from it was actually a termed from a 1959 advertising campaign for a retirement community in Arizona. Now you can say you learned something today.
