Today I would like to introduce you to R&R Cultivation. They are an organic mushroom farm based in Roseville, Minnesota. This is the first farm I have visited that is an actual urban farm which was really cool. Co-founders Nick Robinson and Lance Ramm started their operation in 2018 in Nick’s basement! How many of us would think of starting a farm in their basement??

Well within two years they had expanded to a full-scale urban farm in a warehouse. That’s right, the mushrooms are grown in a climate-controlled warehouse in various grow rooms. It is really a fascinating operation. The beauty of this system is that quality organic mushrooms are available year-round. If anyone knows about Minnesota winters, there isn’t much that can be grown here in the winters.

Sustainable Practices

R&R Cultivation has a high commitment to sustainable farming through their innovative production methods. They are working on ongoing improvements and changes to lower their carbon footprint. They are excited as they are working toward having 100% compostable packaging. So not only are they producing high quality organic mushrooms, they are working hard to minimize plastic packaging. If we all think about how much packaging our food produces, any reduction is a great thing. I know I try to purchase foods that limit plastic packaging.

When I interviewed Nick, we talked about why the business has grown so well even in the middle of a pandemic. One of the positives of the current world situation is that people are beginning to invest in their health by choosing healthier food. Mushrooms are a major health food. People have been consuming mushrooms for nutritional and medicinal benefits for more than 5,000 years.

CSA Subscription

Another great opportunity to purchase their mushrooms is through their CSA subscription. If you have participated in a community supported agriculture (CSA) program before, you will love this option. You can have the subscription delivered or pick up at the warehouse. They have weekly, biweekly, or monthly subscriptions. So many options!!

Gourmet Mushroom Mix - R&R Cultivation

Purchasing locally grown organic mushrooms is a great investment in your health and your community. R&R Cultivation offers many different types of mushrooms at local grocery stores, farmer’s markets, at the “farm”, and online. There are so many options. During the summer, I have been purchasing them at my local farmers markets. You can check which farmers markets they are currently at here. If you prefer to check out local grocery stores or co-ops, check out all their retail locations.

Now you might be thinking “I would not know what to do with all these different types of mushrooms.” Well, their website has many recipes to help you out in this area. Plus, mushrooms can be grilled, sautéed, or roasted for wonderful additions to your meals. They can be added to soups, egg dishes, casseroles, and sauces for additional flavor, too.

If you are in Minnesota and are looking for organic mushrooms grown locally, check out R&R Cultivation.

Do you enjoy eating mushrooms? What is your favorite one to eat?

Be Blessed and Be a Blessing,

Heather
