The holiday season often brings with it many traditions that we love or maybe some we just endure. Either way, they are the fabric of our lives. In 2020, many holiday traditions will be modified or even put-on hold, which can be sad. Traditions are an important part of being human.  In this ever-changing world, they can offer predictability and stability not only for children but also for adults.

Some other benefits of traditions include:
  • Create lasting memories
  • Bring families together
  • Strengthen family bonds
  • Provide comfort and a sense of belonging
  • Provide consistency

One tradition from when I was growing up at Christmastime was that we had some type of Italian food, spaghetti with meatballs or lasagna were usually the main course. What is funny about this is that we have no Italian background! My mom and I would talk about the foods she ate growing up. She grew up pretty poor and didn’t really get to experience different ethnic tastes. She used to say she loved the flavors of Italian food. This is probably why it became a part of our family holiday meal. Whenever I eat lasagna it reminds me of these celebrations and my mom.

A tradition that I have started with my grandchildren for the past few years is to choose a Christmas ornament to take home. I have a small tree that I put ornaments on, some old and some new. Each grandchild gets to pick two ornaments to take home with them. I think they enjoy it. Time will tell if it is something they look forward to as they get older.

With 2020 being a strange year to say the least, I believe it is more important than ever to hold to at least some of our holiday traditions. Keeping these traditions alive can boost happiness and give us some stability in these challenging times.

What are some traditions that your family has for the holiday season? Is there a special food that you have this time of year? Are you creating any new traditions this year? Please share in the comments below. I think it is fun for others to see different traditions. Who knows, you might find something to add to your yearly traditions!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Be blessed and be a blessing,

Heather
