Can eating an apple a day keep osteoporosis away?

We have all probably heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Those same apples can keep osteoporosis away, too. Phloridzin is a flavonoid found only in apples, especially in the peel. It turns out this flavonoid has some powerful components. The phloridzin provides protection by improving inflammation markers and oxidative stress. Inflammation exerts significant influence on bone turnover which can result in osteoporosis.

Apples not only provide phloridzin, but also generous amounts of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and boron to help improve bone density.

  • The Fuji apple is the best source of flavonoids and phenolics.
  • Apple phytochemical content is not greatly affected by storage. The nutrients often don’t change even after 52 weeks of proper storage.
  • Eating a fresh apple, including the peel, will yield the greatest source of phytochemical content as processing has been found to negatively affect this content.

Additional benefits of eating apples include reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and Alzheimer’s disease. Apples have been associated with improved outcomes with diabetes, weight management, pulmonary function, and gastrointestinal protection. So research does seem to point to there is truth to the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. It is best to purchase organic apples as conventional apples will have pesticide residue.
